history

Construction of the ZUM began in 1955 and ended in late 1956. It was officially opened with a ceremony in 1957. The building was designed by the architect Kosta Nikolow and has an area of 20,570 . The seven-story building has a covered inner courtyard. In 1986 the ZUM was renovated under the direction of the architect Atanas Nikolow . During the period of socialism in Bulgaria (1944–1989) the department store was a typical department store in which goods of all kinds were offered for sale.

After the democratic change in 1989, the state department store was privatized and sold to the British Regent Pacific Group at a price of DM 30.003 million . Under the new owner, the department store was modernized and expanded into a shopping center with luxury boutiques.

Another renovation in 1999/2000 was followed by a new owner: The businessman Georgi Gergow from Plovdiv acquired the ZUM on October 19, 2004.
