The Sweta Nedelja Cathedral is a medieval church that has suffered multiple destruction and has been rebuilt several times. Below the cathedral and on the square in front of the Sheraton Hotel are the remains of the ancient Roman baths of Serdica (see Sofia Central Mineral Baths # History ).

In the late 19th and the first decades of the 20th century, the cathedral was also called the "Holy King" (Bulgarian Свети Крал / Sweti Kral) because the body of the Serbian King Stefan Uroš II Milutin (1282-1321) was kept here . In 2007 the body was given over by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and the Sinod of Sofia as a sign of solidarity with the Serbian Orthodox Church . This handover can be interpreted as a more than friendly gesture, because Milutin is now also venerated as a saint in Bulgaria and his bones have the status of a relic . Today it rests again in the 2004 newly consecrated Banjska Monastery in northern Kosovo .

In 1925, communists bombed the Sveta Nedelya cathedral , killing 120 people and injuring 500.
