Tahir Djide

Muhammad Tahir Djide (born April 14, 1939 in Sidenreng Rappang , † September 4, 2009 ) was an Indonesian badminton coach .

Career

Djide revolutionized training in Indonesian badminton when he was appointed national coach for the country in 1971. His Equipes, known as the "Magnificent Seven", won three times in a row in 1973, 1976 and 1979 in the Thomas Cup , the world championship for men's teams. He trained single players like Rudy Hartono , Liem Swie King and Iie Sumirat , but also double stars like Tjun Tjun , Johan Wahjudi , Christian Hadinata and Ade Chandra . He led Icuk Sugiarto to the world title, but the world champions Ardy Wiranata and Taufik Hidayat also quote Tahir Djide in their acknowledgments.

Djide received the Mahaputra Pratama Medal from President Abdurrahman Wahid for his services in August 2000 . On March 1st, 2008 he officially ended his coaching career after 37 years of service.

He died on September 4, 2009 of liver cancer .
