Notched spatula

Toothed spatula with wooden handle and triangular teeth

The trowel , the trowel ( teeth trowel ) or toothed bar is a tool for applying adhesive or thin-bed mortar over a larger area.

The toothed splint is used to apply thin-bed mortar to flat stones and can also be part of a mortar slide .

construction

Notched trowel with rectangular teeth

A toothed spatula is made of a steel sheet on which a grip strip of wood or plastic is fixed. There is also the notched trowel , in which a handle made of wood or plastic is mounted parallel to the sheet steel. Both variants have notches (teeth) on at least one longitudinal side of the steel sheet .

Forms of teeth

Triangular teeth for tile adhesive

The teeth of the notched trowel can have different shapes:

Triangular teeth: Triangular teeth
Triangular serration: Triangular serration
Rectangular teeth: Rectangular teeth
Round teeth: Round teeth

In addition, a distinction is made for each tooth shape according to the size and spacing of the teeth. This determines the amount and shape of the adhesive to be applied.

Labelling

The Technical Commission for Building Adhesives (TKB) in the Adhesives Association published TKB leaflet 6 in May 2007, in which the TKB short names are explained. These consist of a letter followed by a number .

  • A1 to A5 and B1 to B17 denote triangular serrations in different sizes.
  • C1 to C5 are rectangular teeth,
  • S1 to S4 are triangular pointed teeth,
  • R1 and R2 are special rectangular teeth,
  • R3 and M1 are round teeth.

use

Articulated trowel

Using a notched trowel, the adhesive is evenly applied to the substrate in the amount prescribed by the manufacturer. The shape and size of the notched trowel is prescribed by the adhesive manufacturer, depending on the substrate and the material to be bonded. For this purpose, the notched trowel is named after TKB for the adhesive. The use of the correct notched trowel is particularly important when gluing tiles and other floor coverings .

The articulated trowel is a novelty in the field of notched trowels. This was specially developed for tiling. The kinked teeth on the trowel make it easier to determine how much is applied to the floor when applying the adhesive. In addition, the wrist is spared, as the trowel no longer has to be tilted when applying the adhesive.

Order quantity

The amount of adhesive applied with a notched trowel is determined by

  • the density of the adhesive (including water or solvent content),
  • the type, i.e. the teeth of the notched trowel,
  • the wear and tear of the notched trowel and
  • the angle of attack when applying.

Different application quantities of 500 g / m² for A1 toothing and 1600 g / m² for S1 are possible. (90 ° angle of attack / density 1.0 g / cm³)
