Zaman (Cyprus)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zaman ( Turkish for "time" ) was a Cypriot Turkish newspaper .

The first edition appeared on December 25, 1891 , as the publication of an Ottoman reading room . Although the trader Hacı Derviş Efendi was named as the official concessionaire , the Ottoman Reading Room was the actual owner.

In 1892, in addition to the actual Zaman , seven other magazines were published in different languages:

  • The Times of Cyprus : weekly edition, in English.
  • The Owl : weekly edition, in English.
  • Kıbrıs : weekly edition, in Turkish.
  • Alitia : weekly edition, in modern Greek.
  • Kipros : weekly edition, in modern Greek.
  • Fonitis Kipru : weekly edition, in modern Greek.
  • Salpinks : weekly edition, in modern Greek.
  • ENOSIS : weekly edition, in modern Greek.
  • Evagoras : weekly edition, in modern Greek.

When it came to political disputes between the sultans and the Young Turks within the editorial office, the Young Turks separated in 1892 and brought out the newspaper Yeni Zaman , which they later renamed Kıbrıs .

The Zaman is, according to the research department and the national archives of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, the oldest Turkish newspaper on the island. The unofficial first Turkish newspaper was the Ümid and appeared just one year after the British had ruled , in 1879.
