Condemned with Sanbenito and Carocha

The Sanbenito ( Spanish Sambenito ) was a piece of clothing in the shape of a scapular that was worn over normal clothing. He was the penitential garb of the Inquisition . The defendants, whose sentences were announced at a car dairy, had to wear a sanbenito. Those sentenced to lesser sentences wore simple Sanbenitos with only a St. Andrew's cross, while the black penitential robes of those sentenced to severe sentences often depicted flames and demons, alluding to the fate of the convicted person. In addition, they carried a Carocha with further images that symbolized their offenses.

The obligation to wear a sanbenito in public for life or for a certain period of time was imposed as a punishment by the Inquisition Courts. If wearing the sanbenito was imposed as a punishment, it was yellow and marked with a red St. Andrew's cross on the back and chest. The use of the sanbenito was not only a punishment for the victims, but also for the family and descendants, as it was customary to order that the sanbenitos of the convicts be hung in the cathedral or in the parish churches after serving the sentence or after their death. In some cases, convicts were able to get rid of wearing the sanbenito by paying a transfer fee.
