The Zammer Tunnel is a 2,335 m long railway tunnel of the Arlbergbahn . It has two tracks, is approved for a maximum speed of 140 km / h and is located east of Landeck-Zams train station . He bypasses the village of Zams and also the St. Vinzenz Zams hospital , which previously suffered from the noise of the railway. In order to absorb possible vibrations, which in turn could disturb the KH Zams, the mass-spring system was used for the first time in Austria .

construction

Construction began in May 1994, the tunnel was erected on September 17, 1994 (east drive) and September 26, 1994 (west drive) and the breakthrough took place on July 23, 1995. The (single-track) opening was originally for May 23, 1999 planned. Due to a strong thunderstorm, the route in the areas of Roppen, Schönwies, Flirsch and St. Anton am Arlberg was so badly muddy that it had to be closed until May 30th. The first train finally passed through the Zammer Tunnel on May 30, 1999 at 9:55 p.m.

At the same time as the official commissioning, the Zams stop was closed without replacement.

safety

Fire brigade exercise in the tunnel: road-rail vehicle and tunnel rescue train

As two new tunnels were created as a result of the re-routing in the Kronburg – Landeck area, the Zams volunteer fire brigade received a two-way vehicle to be able to intervene quickly in the event of a fire, especially in the longer Zammer tunnel. In order to enable the fire brigade to enter the tunnel and to enable the vehicle to be rerailed, the tunnel was equipped with driveways at both portals. In addition, a tunnel rescue train is stationed at Landeck-Zams station. If necessary, additional fire engines can be loaded onto its low-floor vehicle.
