The Zamoyski Academy ( Latin Academia Zamoscensis ; Polish Akademia Zamojska ) was a university in Zamość .

history

The Zamoyski Academy was founded in Zamość in 1594 by the Chancellor Jan Zamoyski . The foundation was confirmed in the same year by the papal bull of Clement VIII . Teaching began in March 1595. In the chancellor's founding act of July 5, 1600, ten chairs are listed, including two in law, one in physics and medicine, and the rest in philosophy. The first rector of the academy was Melchior Stefanides . The office of Chancellor was held by the Bishop of Chełm . Thanks to the efforts of Szymon Szymonowic , a number of well-known teachers could be won for the academy, including the grammarian Jan Ursinus Niedźwiedzki, Melchior Stefanides, the philologist Adam Burski, the lawyer Tomasz Drezner and later William Bruce, Fabian Birkowski and Domenico Convalis. In 1637 the Academy took over the patronage of the College in Ołyka . Jan Zamoyski's daughter-in-law, Katarzyna Ostrogska , founded a seminary at the academy in 1640 and theology began to dominate the teaching program in the period that followed.

After flourishing, the level of the school fell steadily from the middle of the 17th century and with it the popularity of the school. In the middle of the 18th century, the bishop Jerzy Laskarys made an attempt at reform, which, however, was not crowned with success. After the first partition of Poland in 1772, Zamość came under Austrian administration and the academy was closed in 1784.
