The Zancleopsidae are a family of hydrozoa (Hydrozoa) from the tribe of the cnidarians (Cnidaria) living exclusively in the sea . It is a very small family with currently only six species in two genera .

features

The hydroid polyps are not yet known. The medusa has a conical to dome-shaped rounded umbrella without an apical chamber. The manubrium is wide-bottle-shaped with a square or cruciform base. The mouth is diamond-shaped or rounded and may have lips; but these can also be missing. The gonads are arranged around the manubrium or sit in four interradial fields. They have deep interradial furrows that can divide the original four gonadal fields into eight fields. The medusa has two to four head-shaped marginal tentacles, the heads of which can also be branched laterally. The marginal buds clasp the edge of the umbrella and are provided with adaxial hemispherical attachments that are reinforced with nettle cells . Ocelles can either sit on the marginal buds or on the proximal parts of the tentacles.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The representatives of the family come from New Guinea (Southwest Pacific), in the eastern Indian Ocean, and in the North and South Atlantic.

Systematics

The family is currently assigned two genera:
