Zarina Bhimji

Zarina Bhimji (* 1963 in Mbarara , Uganda ) is an Indian-born British artist .

The daughter of Indian immigrants in Uganda emigrated to Great Britain with her family in 1974 after being driven out by Idi Amin . She studied at Goldsmiths College from 1983 to 1986 and the Slade School of Fine Art from 1988 to 1989 .

Works

In her installations made up of large-format color photos and light boxes, she particularly addresses uprooting and exile experiences. In 1995, the Public Art Development Trust commissioned the installation Listen to the Room for the London Charity Cross Hospital. In rooms that are mainly used by hospital staff, factual detailed views of dissected human body parts can be seen, in the patient area there are imaginative photographs with flowers, ornaments and animals. Her work The Wall Brooded , which deals with the Ugandan terror regime under Idi Amin, was exhibited at the Kassel Documenta11 2002 .

In 2007 Zarina Bhimji was nominated for the Turner Prize .
