Mbarara is a city with approx. 195,000 inhabitants in southwest Uganda and the center of Ankole . It is the capital of the Mbarara district of the same name and is located at an altitude of about 1473 m above sea level.
During the invasion of Tanzanian troops , who were involved in the overthrow of Idi Amin , Mbarara was exposed to severe destruction.
The city is the seat of the Mbarara University , founded in 1989 , a college and the Mbarara Archdiocese .

The city has had five paved roads ( tar-bound macadam pavement ) since April 2005 after the 2.4 km long Victor Bwana Road was paved : Mbarara High Street , Mbaguta Street , Bishop Wills Street , Bucuku Street and Victor Bwana Road . There is also an airport, which is not regularly served by scheduled airliners.
