Zastler ice holes
The Zastler Eislöcher are an extraordinary natural phenomenon in the upper Zastlertal in the Oberried-Zastler district at the foot of the Feldberg massif .
Location and origin
The ice holes are located in the upper Zastlertal above the Schweizerhof at an altitude of about 740 meters. Here the steep valley floor is covered by large boulders that came here through glaciers from the last glacial period and a rock fall. During the cold season, in addition to snow and ice, cold air also collects in the cavities between the boulders. Since this has a higher density than warm air, it is heavier and only emerges again at the foot of the accumulation of blocks. In addition, it accumulates moisture in the cavities due to the crack water, whereby it loses heat energy ( evaporation cold ). Sometimes there is still ice there at the end of July. They have long been known by the locals as natural cold stores. In the vicinity of the ice holes, the Zastlerbach falls over a two-tier, approximately 4-meter-high waterfall into a small valley heir.
