Zaunerstollen

The Zaunerstollen is a confectionery product that was created by Josef Nickerl , pastry chef at the Zauner confectionery in Bad Ischl , in 1905 through further development of the Ischl wafers . The stollen consists of crushed wafers that are mixed with a nougat-like hazelnut chocolate. The shaped and dried mass is coated with chocolate and then cut into slices.

The creation of the Stollen is due to a form of leftover recycling: First of all, misshapen or broken wafers that arose during production were processed into so-called Nickerl-Batz , a macaroon-shaped dessert for children. Since these were selling well, Josef Nickerl finally created the final shape of the tunnel.
