The Sophia colliery in Witten is a former hard coal mine . The mine was also known under the names Zeche Sophie and Zeche Sophia Rechts Witten . The mine was located in the area of today's streets Hammerteich and Hohenstein.
Mining history
On December 4, 1747, a length field for mining in the south wing of Flöz Geitling was awarded . On July 4th, 1754, an extension to the Längenfeld was awarded. In the same year the mine went into operation for several years. In the years 1772 to 1781 the coal mined was delivered over the Ruhr and Rhine to Kleve . In 1790 the mine was entered on the Niemeyersche map . At this point in time, there was a tunnel and an associated shaft . In December 1798 a tunnel was set up. The tunnel was excavated from 1799 . In October 1800 the mine was closed. On February 3, 1824 , the Sophia colliery consolidated with other mines to form the United Ruhrmannsbank colliery .
