The Union I colliery is a former iron ore mine in Sprockhövel- Scheven. In addition to coal iron stone, hard coal was also extracted from the mine .

Mining history

In 1854 only the mining of iron stone took place, in the course of the year coal mining began. The mine was then in operation for several years. In 1873 ore and hard coal were still extracted from the mine. From the following year only coal iron stone was mined. In 1875 the mine was closed. In 1883 the mine was leased by the United Stock & Scherenberg colliery. In the same year the mining of iron rock was started again. The mined ore was extracted from the Beust shaft of the United Stock & Scherenberg colliery . In 1901, the mining of iron ore at the Union I mine was stopped.

The first production figures come from the year 1867, 58,951 tons of iron ore and 6155 bushels of hard coal were extracted. In 1869 the production amounted to 331 tons of hard coal and an additional amount of iron ore that was not quantified. The last production figures of the mine are from the year 1892, 6243 tons of coal iron stone were extracted.
