Coordinates: 30 ° 6 '  N , 31 ° 19'  O Zeitoun or El-Zeitoun (also El-Zaytoun , arabic الزيتون, DMG az-Zaytūn , literally "olives") is a district in the east of the Egyptian capital Cairo , part of the al-Qahira governorate .

The population on November 11, 2006 was given as 322,317 people. The area is 8.24 km².

Zeitoun is known for the Marian apparitions of Zeitoun , which are said to have taken place in 1968 on the roof of the local Coptic Orthodox Church of St. Mary. The church was built in 1924 in the Byzantine style and consecrated in 1925; The architect was the Italian Leomingelli. 1971-76 was on the occasion of the apparitions and prompted by Schenuda III. In addition, a cathedral was built next to the existing church. There is a place where, according to tradition, the Holy Family stopped on their flight to Egypt .

It is the birthplace of Fathia Nkrumah (born in 1931 as Fathia Helen Rizk), wife of Kwame Nkrumah , the first President of Ghana.
