The time shift , also called the time difference or the time difference ( English time offset , French décalage horaire ), is the distance between different time systems, formed for example from the difference

  • between the zone times of two locations in different time zones ,
  • between a zone time and UTC world time ,
  • between two legal times within an area (state) with temporarily different legal times (usually between zone time and summer time ),
  • between a zone time and the solar time applicable for this location ,
  • between the politically applicable zone time for a location and the geographically appropriate zone time for this location.

Time difference also stands for

  • changing the time information in schedules (e.g. radio program schedules) by changing the time, see summer time
  • in travel medicine, the deviation of the internal clock from the local time, see jet lag
  • in the special theory of relativity the dependence of time on speed, see time dilation
  • in some technical device types the delay time
  • in wave theory the phase shift .
