Zende

Zende (* 1943 in Karadsch / Iran ) is the stage name of Mahmoud Zendehroudi (or Zenderoudi). He is an Iranian artist who has lived in France since 1978 . Zende means alive or life in Persian .

presentation

Zende, who grew up in Tehran , enjoyed their mother's artistic influence with his seven siblings. His works remained hidden until 1962, when he took part in the 2nd Tehran Biennale. Zende then exhibited at the Tehran Gallery in 1966, most recently at the Tehran International Exhibition in 1970. For ten years he worked as a radio and television journalist in Iran.

In 1978 Zende left his homeland and moved to France with his family to devote himself fully to the practice of his art. As an autodidact, Zende discovered new techniques, the use of relief and his own production of paper. For him this is the entry into the art of collage and his creativity allows him to combine various materials, even to create sculptures out of paper.

As the inventor of his own style, Zende is inspired by his own culture, which is even more alive through his exile: he tells stories from Persia. Zende uses calligraphy only as a stylistic element, freed from the secular “rules” of this art: the letter becomes a line and words become symbols, so that the viewer can interpret them. He often adorns his works with quotations from Persian literature or - like ancient Chinese masters - with his own poems: a true poet.
