The central blood volume is the volume fraction of the blood that is located between the pulmonary and aortic valves , i.e. in the pulmonary circulation and the left side of the heart . As a decisive control variable for the central venous pressure and the diastolic filling of the left ventricle, it plays an essential role in the short-term mechanisms of circulatory regulation .
