Central Institute for Isotope and Radiation Research

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Central Institute for Isotope and Radiation Research (ZfI) was a non-university research facility of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR (AdW) .

history

The facility existed in Leipzig from 1970 to 1991 . It emerged as part of the academy reform that began in 1968 and was created by merging the Institute for Stable Isotopes Leipzig (1956-1970), the Institute for Applied Radioactivity Leipzig (1956-1970), the Institute for Applied Isotope Research Berlin-Buch (1961-1970) and further institutions formed.

The director of the institute from 1969 to 1989 was Klaus Wetzel. After the political upheaval in the GDR, Frieder Bigl took over the management of the institute until its dissolution on December 31, 1991. Successor institutions include the Leibniz Institute for Surface Modification and the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research - UFZ .
