The Zentrallehranstalten ( ZLA ) are a few schools in the education system in Austria that are directly administered by the federal government.

History and position in the education system

The distinction between these schools is historical, they are not administered by the Education Directorate but by the relevant ministry. The locations are also of historical importance, as many educational institutions were introduced during the times of the monarchy to ensure the training of skilled workers.

Due to this special status, the schools are grouped under the name Zentrallehranstalten . Each central teaching institution is unique in its educational focus in Austria.

The agricultural and forestry educational institutions are also subordinate to the Federal Ministry for Agriculture, Regions and Tourism . The forms of training are regulated in the agricultural and forestry vocational training law.

Representation of the interests of the students

The central  college student council (ZSV) represents the interests of the students at the school .
