The former convent building of the Weißenau monastery, today part of the ZfP Südwürttemberg

In the course of secularization and the associated abolition of the monasteries and ecclesiastical dominions, the monastery was used for secular purposes in 1803. In 1892 the Weissenau sanatorium was founded.

In 1940 and 1941, 691 patients were deported in buses to Grafeneck as part of " Aktion T4 " and murdered there. In 2006 the nationally respected memorial of the gray buses was erected to commemorate the victims ; part of the two-part monument changes its location and has since been set up in several locations in Germany.

The state sanatoriums and nursing homes were renamed to Psychiatric State Hospitals (PLK) in 1953 . In 1975 the psychiatry enquête was published with the opening of psychiatric facilities and expansion of outpatient care offers. Weißenau has been a specialist hospital for psychiatry and psychotherapy since 1976 .

In 1994 the Center for Psychiatry Weißenau participated in the pilot project quality assurance of inpatient depression treatment .

The Centers for Psychiatry in Baden-Württemberg became institutions under public law in 1996. The three centers for psychiatry in Bad Schussenried, Weissenau and Zwiefalten merged in 2009 to form the ZfP Südwürttemberg with headquarters in Bad Schussenried.
