Zernike is an impact crater on the back of the moon and therefore cannot be directly observed from Earth. It lies northwest of the larger crater Anderson and northeast of Papaleksi . The Spencer Jones crater joins its southern outer rim.

Like many craters on the back of the moon, Zernike is pitted from impacts. The crater is worn and eroded, especially in the southern area. Several small craters cover the rim and the rocky crater floor also shows corresponding traces.
