Zhang Liao (* 169 ; † 222 ) was a Chinese general of the late Han Dynasty and the time of the Three Kingdoms . Allegedly he descended from Nie Yi , a representative of the Eastern Han Dynasty.

After He Jin's death, Zhang Liao served the usurper Dong Zhuo as the cavalry commander. After his death he served Lü Bu and moved with this defeat to Li Jue and Guo Si to Xu Zhou. In 196 Zhang Liao became Chancellor of the Lu Empire and successfully fought against Liu Bei , Cao Cao and Yuan Shao under Lü Bus's command . In 198, after Lü Bus's death, he was taken in by Cao Cao and entrusted with the supreme command of the eastern armed forces. During Cao Cao's attack on Han Zhong when Sun Quan stormed Hefei Castle, Zhang Liao successfully repulsed Wu's army. For this he received the title "Who conquered the East" from Cao Cao.

Under Cao Pi , Zhang Liao was promoted again and decorated with the title "Lord of Jinyang."
