Zifta ( Arabic زفتى, DMG Ziftā ) is a city in Egypt within the al-Gharbiyya governorate with approx. 102,000 inhabitants. The Zifta weir is located at Zifta .
history
Zifta is known in modern Egyptian history for an uprising that took place during the Egyptian Revolution of 1919 when the British occupation Saad Zaghloul Pasha along with other Wafd party leaders were expelled from Egypt and banished to Malta . Then the people of Zifta gathered under Youssef El Guindi and declared their independence from the crown under the name of Republic of Zifta.
