The gypsy cards belong to the fortune telling cards . A deck of cards consists of 36 cards, which are labeled in 6 languages (German, English, French, Italian, Croatian, Hungarian). They are manufactured and sold by the Piatnik company in Vienna, among others . The maps available today were last slightly changed and updated around 1960.

Name and story

The term gypsy cards or gypsy fortune telling cards did not appear until the end of the 19th century when fortune telling cards could be produced and sold in large numbers. It simply made use here of the mystical reputation of " Gypsy " as experienced soothsayers and fortune tellers to the sale to boost something. Even before these cards were issued by the Piatnik company in Vienna around 1920, there were similar fortune telling cards or serve cards . Some of them were generally referred to as Lenormand cards , even if they had little to do with the corresponding originals.

The key words on the cards in six languages indicate that their origins in the themes and symbols of the Austro-Hungarian k. and k. (imperial and royal) monarchy can be found. The main target group was probably the upscale bourgeois society - especially women. This can be seen, for example, from the fact that the topic of “money through work” is not mentioned in the Gypsy cards. The strength of the deck clearly lies in its many emotion cards, which allow the finest shades in the analysis of delicate matters of the heart, but also of other worrisome or pleasant family events.

The gypsy cards are not to be confused with the Russian gypsy oracle . Its 25 cards each have four half-motifs in a diamond shape ( 36 cards in the original Seni horoscope oracle ). The cards are laid out in a square. The divination takes place on the basis of those pairings in which the motif halves of two adjacent cards complement each other to form a complete picture.

Due to the similarity in their pictures, names and meanings, the tipper cards are often incorrectly referred to as gypsy cards or confused with them. But they are not identical. The Gypsy cards differ from similar decks in that they are not numbered.

Nowadays the gypsy maps are an increasingly popular medium for predicting the future, but knowledge about these maps is still very limited and there is little specialist literature.
