Zimbabwe Electricity Distribution Company

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Zimbabwe Electricity Distribution Company (ZETDC) is a Zimbabwean electricity company that supplies end users in the country. The company's head office is located in the Electricity Center , on Samora Machel Avenue , in the capital, Harare . It is a subsidiary of the Zimbabwe State Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA Holdings).

With the planned, announced network shutdowns in 2019 due to the load shedding from the Kariba power plant due to the low water level in the Kariba reservoir as well as the restrictions in the Hwange coal-fired power plant with the consequential effects in the overall network and limited import options, the ZETDC is trying to compensate for the nationwide electricity consumption. Power cuts are therefore made in the morning between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. and in the evening from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. In order to avoid a collapse of the national transmission network, the shutdowns can also last longer. A similar situation also exists in neighboring Zambia , which is also heavily dependent on the Kariba power station and can hardly influence the decline in the water level in the reservoir.

In October 2019, the Zimbabwean Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) approved the state energy utility ZESA to increase electricity tariffs by over 400 percent. This increase is justified with the devaluation of the Zimbabwe dollar against the main currencies; characterized an increase in current consumer tariff of 38.61 is cents / kWh to 162.16 cents / kWh provided.

To improve the security of energy supply in Zimbabwe, ZETDC is building a solar power plant in Chidome Ward in the Hwange district , which will ultimately have a total output of 107 MW. A long-distance line is to be used to route the electricity from here to the 33 kV Hwange station for feeding into the national grid.
