Zinat Mahal

Zinat Mahal (* 1821 ; † 1882 in Burma ), also called Nawab Zinat Mahal Begum or Zeenat Mahal , was the main wife of the last Indian mogul Bahadur Shah II. She was the only one of his wives who herself belonged to a noble family. The two married in 1840. Bahadur Shah was already 64 years old at the time.

Zinat Mahal was able to oust Bahadur Shah's previous favorite wife and gave birth to a son, Mirza Jawan Bakht . She tried to secure the succession to the throne for him over the next few years, although he was the fifteenth of a total of 16 sons of the Grand Mughal. In the Indian Uprising of 1857 she supported the British, while her husband at least nominally led the uprising. After the suppression of the uprising, she followed the Mughal into exile in Burma, where she died.
