Interest rate
The interest rate is a construct used to circumvent the medieval prohibition of interest on loans.
The creditor takes the debtor's fruit-bearing goods (fields, vines) in pledge. He manages the goods and keeps the income as interest .
Pope Alexander III banned the rate of interest in 1163.
