Zippy (comic)

Zippy ( Zippy the Pinhead ) is a comix figure by the American illustrator Bill Griffith .

Zippy is a humorous protagonist who moves on different levels of reality. Dressed in a clown robe, more commonly referred to as muumuu , and a single strand of hair on his slightly deformed head, he goes through all kinds of professions and life situations, always with an inappropriate saying on his lips.

Zippy's first appearance was in 1971 in the underground comic book Real Pulp Comics from San Francisco . The first stories were strongly based on the mentally handicapped actor Schlitzie . Bill Griffith had seen him in the movie Freaks a few years earlier .

As of 1986, Zippy stories were licensed as a comic strip by King Features Syndicate and soon afterwards were printed in 200 daily newspapers. In Germany he appeared regularly in U-Comix in the early 1980s .
