Blatzheim Cistercian Abbey

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey of Blatzheim was a monastery in Blatzheim , Kerpen , Archdiocese of Cologne from 1247 to 1802 .

history

The Gevelsberg monastery , founded around 1230, founded the Blatzheim nunnery on Neffelbach 25 kilometers west of Cologne in 1240 , which was incorporated into the Cistercian order in 1247 (Immediatoberer: Kloster Heisterbach ). The former Grangie "Gut Giffelsberg" (modified from "Gevelsberg") is still reminiscent of the mother monastery . In the first centuries the monastery was intended for aristocratic women from the Cologne and Jülich domains. It was not until the beginning of the 15th century that bourgeois women could also enter. In 1794 the nuns fled the French Revolution . In 1802 the monastery was closed. Today only a few traces are left, including an inscription from 1782 on a beam of the Blatzheimer Obermühle, the former monastery mill. Hans Elmar Onnau (1930–2010) made a particular contribution to researching the history of the monastery.
