Cistercian Abbey of Lieu-Notre-Dame (Perrignier)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cistercian Abbey of Lieu-Notre-Dame (also: Lieu or Petit-Lieu or Notre-Dame-du-Lieu ) was a convent of the Cistercian women in Perrignier , a municipality in the Haute-Savoie department in France , from 1150 to 1538 .

history

In the early days of the Cistercian Order, when male monasteries were founded in the 12th century, women’s monasteries were often founded next door for female family members who also felt called to be. This explains the founding of the Lieu-Notre-Dame nunnery south of Lake Geneva in Chablais , not far from Aulps Monastery . In 1536 it was looted and destroyed by the Bern Reformation and dissolved in 1538. The church and some monastery buildings have been preserved in remains (privately owned).
