The Cistercian Abbey of Santo Domingo de Silos (also: Santo Domingo el Antiguo ) is since 1150 the monastery of Cistercian nuns in Toledo in Spain .

history

King Alfonso VI After the conquest of Toledo, von León founded the Benedictine monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos (after St. Dominic of Silos ), which became Cistercian in 1150 and still exists today. As the oldest monastery in Toledo, it is also called "the old" (Spanish: El Antiguo ). The monastery is called "Imperial Monasterio Santo Domingo de Silos (El Antiguo)" on its website. The architect Juan de Herrera was involved in the reconstruction of the building in the 16th century , and the painter El Greco , who began his Spanish career here in 1577 and is buried in the monastery , was involved in the decoration . Parts of the church are a museum. The convent (currently about 10 nuns) lives from the production of luxury foods. Abbess Pilar García-Argudo celebrated the 50th anniversary of her profession on October 5, 2014. The monastery is not to be confused with the Benedictine abbey of the same name in the province of Burgos .
