The Cistercian Abbey Valldonzella is since 1237 the monastery of Cistercian nuns in Barcelona .

history

The official incorporation of the women's monastery Valldonzella ("Jungfrauental", from Latin vallis "valley" and dominicella "virgin", cf. French demoiselle ) in the Cistercian order is attested for 1237. The monastery was located in Santa Creu d'Olorde (today: Barcelona, Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district). In 1259 the nuns were expelled and went to Creu Coberta (today: Barcelona, Sants-Montjuïc district). Several kings have been guests there over the years. King Martin I of Aragon died in the monastery in 1410.

When this place was also destroyed in 1652, the convent moved to the Nazareth monastery, which had previously been inhabited by Cistercian monks, in today's Carrer de Valldonzella street , and later also to Rambla (where a relief of the Annunciation still reminds of the monastery today ). The nuns stayed here (with several interruptions) until they were expelled again in 1909.

Under Abbess Maria de la Esperanza Roca y Roca († 1924) they decided to build a new building and had the monastery building (1913) and the neo-Gothic church (1922) in today's Carrer del Cister 41 (district of Sant Gervasi de Cassoles ) by the architect Bernardí Martorell , not far from Bellesguard ).
