Bernardí Martorell i Puig ; (Born  January 20, 1877 in Barcelona ; †  August 8, 1937 in Barcelona) was a Catalan architect . The nephew of the architect Joan Martorell i Montells can be classified stylistically between Modernisme (the Catalan Art Nouveau ) and Noucentisme (the Catalan neo- historicism ).

Life

His father Bernard Martorell i Falp (1843-1906) was an industrialist, engineer and chemist, his mother Josepa Puig i Benítez (1850-1884) came from Matanzas in Cuba and died when Bernardí was six years old of tuberculosis . As a member of the upper class, the education took place at private schools, the family spent the summer on their own estate La Ferrussa in Santa Perpètua de Mogoda . In the summer of 1891 he traveled to Paris with his father; this stay should leave a defining impression. During this time he also fell ill with tuberculosis, which was treated in Pau and Davos .

He completed his studies at the Escola Superior d'Arquitectura de Barcelona, where Domènech i Montaner and Gallissà i Soqué were among his teachers, on October 24, 1902. A subsequent trip to Istanbul explains his preference for Byzantine and oriental elements in various works, such as the Sala d'Actes of the Seminari Conciliar de Barcelona. As a student, his uncle, who was a member of the planning staff for the construction of the Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família , introduced him personally to Antoni Gaudí . He was already working on the construction site as a student and after completing his training found a job as a secretary to the board of directors.

In 1910 he married Mercè Jordà i Pagès, with her he had five children: Bernardí, Mercè, Josepa, Rafel and Montserrat.

Martorell's work suffered with the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War , as his main client in recent years was the Catholic Church. He died on August 8, 1937 at the Hospital de Sant Pau in a myocarditis .

Remarks

  1. The name is often wrongly given as Bernardí Martorell i Rius , e.g. B. on the official homepage of the Ruta del Modernisme . Since Bernardí's mother was named Josepa Puig i Benítez , Puig is clearly the correct second surname. The error was corrected in March 2011.
  2. There is obviously also confusion regarding the year of birth. Often one finds 1870 as the year of birth. On www.gaudiallgaudi.com ( Memento of the original from January 8, 2011 in the Internet Archive ) Info: The archive link was inserted automatically and has not yet been checked. Please check the original and archive link according to the instructions and then remove this notice. stood z. B. in the heading 1870, but below that in the biography 1877. The error was corrected in February 2011, the wrong date of birth on www.epdlp.com was corrected in March 2011. The other biographical data (year of death of the mother in 1884 when Bernardí was six years old; graduation in 1902) suggest that 1877 is correct. @1@ 2Template: Webachiv / IABot / www.gaudiallgaudi.com
