Zoarces is a genus of fish from the family of the eel mother (Zoarcidae) in the partial order of the eel mother relatives (Zoarcales). They are bottom-dwelling marine fish that occur with four species in the northwestern Pacific as well as with Zoarces americanus in the northwest and with Zoarces viviparus also in the northeast Atlantic, including the tributaries of the North and Baltic Seas . They live from the immediate shore to the outer shelf .

Zoarces species are 20 to 110 cm long and have an eel-like elongated body with 101 to 146 vertebrae. The dorsal, anal and caudal fins have grown together to form a continuous fin edge. The caudal fin is supported by 9 to 11 fin rays and a single epuralia. There are sharp spines in the dorsal fin. The eyes are surrounded by a semicircle of 5 to 6 suborbital bones. There is a pore between the eyes.
