Zoilus (tyrant)

Zoilos was a Syrian mercenary leader and in the 2nd century BC Chr. Tyrant over the cities Dora and Strato storm on the Mediterranean in what is now Israel .

He fought the Hasmonean King Alexander Jannäus and tried to support the port city of Ptolemais, today's Acre , which was besieged by him. Together they turned to Ptolemy Lathyros , who actually came to the rescue with numerous soldiers. At this time, however, the city of Ptolemais ran over to Alexander Jannäus, while Zoilus went to Ptolemaios with some ambassadors from the city of Gaza and asked for his assistance. A little later, Alexander promised the Ptolemaic 400 talents if he killed Zoilus. Ptolemy Lathyros agreed and had him executed.
