Zolaykha Sherzad

Zolaykha Sherzad (* 1967 in Kabul ) is an Afghan - Swiss - American artist, fashion designer , architect and university teacher .

life and work

Zolaykha Sherzad's family left their homeland of Afghanistan in 1978 due to the Saur Revolution . The family fled to Iran. Due to the Islamic Revolution , the family fled again six months later and settled in Switzerland. She graduated from the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne in 1994 . She was a co-founder of ArX New York | Archinect , which has received numerous awards, including a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship . Sherzad is Professor of Architecture at the Pratt Institute School of Architecture in New York City .

As a founding member (2000) of the School of Hope (SoH) , a non-profit organization , Sherzad enables children to get an education in Afghanistan. The School of Hope is now part of SOLA and Zolaykha Sherzad is a board member. In 2004 she founded Zarif Design in Kabul. In cooperation with Afghan women, traditional Afghan cuts and textiles are transformed into modern textile design for the Zarif clothing line.

In 2009 Zolaykha Sherzad took part in the Biennale di Venezia . In 2012 she exhibited at dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel.
