Euphorbia burgeri is a species of the genus spurge ( Euphorbia ) in the family of Euphorbiaceae (Euphorbiaceae).
description
The succulent Euphorbia burgeri forms shrubs or small trees up to 3 meters high. The triangular branches are up to 4.5 centimeters thick and are divided into egg-shaped, up to 12 centimeters long sections by deep constrictions. There are flat teeth on the edges. The thorn shields have grown together to form a continuous, approximately 1.5 millimeter wide horn rim. The thorns are up to 15 millimeters long.
The inflorescence consists of single and simple cymes on stems up to 1 millimeter long. The cyathia become 3 millimeters in size. The elliptical nectar glands are colored yellow and butt against each other. The bluntly lobed fruit is 4 millimeters long and 6 millimeters wide. It contains the approximately 2.5 millimeters large spherical seeds that have a smooth surface.
Distribution and systematics
Euphorbia burgeri is widespread in the east of Ethiopia on slopes with limestone at altitudes of 1200 to 1560 meters. The species is on the IUCN Red List and is critically endangered.
The species was first described in 1993 by Michael George Gilbert .
