The Zollner Peace Chapel is a chapel located at an altitude of about 1,750 meters in the part of the Carnic Alps belonging to the Austrian state of Carinthia . It stands on a small elevation in the vicinity of the Zollnerseehütte to the southeast .

history

The chapel was built in the 1980s as a memorial and memorial for the fallen soldiers of the mountain war in World War I - from 1915 to 1917 the front line ran just south of today's chapel location.

On the initiative of the mountain rescue doctor and chairman of the local group of the AV section Austria, Ernst Steinwender, the construction took place in cooperation with this local group and the Dellach-Gailtal local association of the Austrian Association of Comrades. The plan for the construction came from the Italian architecture student Marina Muser . The construction was mainly financed by donations. A large part of the construction work was carried out by volunteers. The building material used for the wall walls was mainly the remains of former war shelters from the First World War. Shortly before completion, the roof structure was destroyed by a lightning strike in June 1987. After repairing the damage, the chapel was consecrated on September 20, 1987 as part of a peace festival with the participation of over 2,300 participants.

Since then, a mountain mass has been held every year on August 15 at the Zollner Peace Chapel.
