Customs riots

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The tariff riots in Upper Hesse were peasant uprisings that turned against excessive taxes to the authorities.

A Black Corps of revolting farmers marched in the Upper Hesse region of the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt between Büdingen and Schotten in 1830 . Several thousand demonstrators storm customs stations, destroy files and destroy the buildings.

The causes of the uprisings were varied, but they were not aimed against the feudal state order. It was not a struggle for civil liberties either, but an uprising by the rural population, increasingly impoverished and disgruntled by political measures. Price increases, consumption taxes, lack of work, too low wages, too high taxes, arbitrariness of the police and administrations brought the population on the barricades.
