Zombies Ate My Neighbors (in Europe Zombies ) is a video game developed by LucasArts and distributed by Konami , which was released in 1993 for the two game consoles Super NES and Sega Mega Drive .

In this game, after choosing your character, you move through individual game sections, in which the aim is to save a certain number of people from various opponents, most of which are borrowed from the horror genre. You look at the action from above at a slight angle ( isometric ) and move quite freely through hand-drawn, self-contained areas that depict various everyday situations. There are a total of 48 game scenarios. To ward off your opponents you have a handful of very bizarre things available, ranging from inflatable clowns to water pistols and potions that transform you into various monsters.

Allusions

The game itself was particularly popular with many players because it satirized a myriad of well-known films by showing familiar characters, settings or short story sections. Texas Chainsaw Massacre , Night of the Living Dead and Dracula , among others, were immortalized here. A self-reference from LucasArts can also be found in the game, a hidden level (password: BCDF) is an allusion to the well-known Adventure Day of the Tentacle , which can be played as level 0 and again as a bonus level between the first and second level.

Sequels

In 1994, a sequel to this game called Ghoul Patrol was released for the SNES by LucasArts. It continues the basic game concept, but divides the scenarios that you go through while playing into different topics. In addition, the basic tone of the game has become much more serious, the original focus on humor and parody is completely missing here.

An allusion to the game could be seen in the film "Scouts vs. Zombies - Handbook for the Zombie Apocalypse" with Patrick Schwarzenegger (tampolia scene).

Enemies

In the first two levels, only zombies are the protagonist's enemies. From level 3 ( Terror in Aisle Five ) new enemies appear:

Zombies: Slow monsters that can be defeated with a single hit from the water pistol.

Killer Dolls "Fun Baby Tim": They are the second appearing opponent in the game. They jump out of their supermarket packaging and throw small cleavers. Once you have your goal in mind, you can take a quick sprint. It is entirely possible that a defeated doll could turn into a fire .

Chainsaw maniac; Jason: You are very similar to the horror film antagonist Jason Voorhees in that you wear the same mask as him, but unlike Jason have a chainsaw as a weapon, which in turn is reminiscent of the horror film Texas Chainsaw Massacre . You can cut your way through hedges and doors with the chainsaw. In some versions, the chainsaw has been replaced by a fire ax.

Clones: They first appear in level 5 ( Weird Kids on the Block ). They grow from green cocoons that resemble that of a butterfly, but these cocoons grow on the ground, usually near a meteorite. They are also dealt with in one hit like zombies, turning into a cloud of smoke.

Mushroom males: They always appear on prickly grass, which can only be removed by the lawn mower. You need two hits to be defeated.

Plants: They usually grow in a field of prickly grass and often form the center of the entire field. They are immobile, which makes them easy to defeat. Her only defense consists of purple balls of liquid that she shoots into the air so that they hit the protagonist from above.

Mummies: often found in pyramids. There they get out of upright coffins that are against a wall. They die after five hits with the water pistol and explode like zombies and disintegrate into their individual parts.

Martians and Martian football players: Their place of appearance is level 12 ( Mars need Cheerleaders ). Martians have laser cannons as weapons that shoot red bubbles. If you are hit, you will be locked in such a bubble for about two seconds and during this time you will be immobile. You also lose a life bar. Football players are the only opponents who do no harm. You can only push the opponent away, as in football, who then flies a few meters in the opposite direction. If you throw a football in the direction of a football player, he forgets everything around him and tries to catch him. This can very well be used as a tactic.

Fish people: They can be found in the water and can easily attack a swimming opponent who cannot defend himself at this time. To go ashore, they jump high in the air and land precisely in front of their victim. When they die, they explode, similar to mummies and zombies, leaving behind a few still living fish.

Ants: They emerge from holes that they have dug themselves or from old mine shafts. In addition to the normal purple ants, there are larger, red ants that are stronger. However, both can be defeated with a single hit of the laser cannon.

Frankenstein : As in the film, the monster is an invention of an insane professor. He is connected to electrical lines on his arms, which are either intended to keep him alive or to hold him in one place. As soon as the protagonist comes close to the monster, its bonds are released and it tries to attack the player with electrical impulses from its body. The monster is difficult to overcome because even if the weapon does a lot against him, it still sucks life energy from the player, who is then forced to let go. After the monster is defeated, it explodes into many tiny sparks.
