The zoster ( ancient Greek ζωστήρ ) was a Greek belt .

Description and use

The zoster was a leather belt provided with a buckle made of bronze was closed. Men wore it in wartime over a tunic or over a chiton . It also served the purpose of keeping the chiton and himation together . It was later also worn by women.

history

Homer mentions zoster in the Odyssey , where the belt was used by the Greek warriors. This belt came in the 6th century BC. BC and initially served military purposes. In the Hellenistic period it was also worn by women.
