Most of the sightings in Germany come from the Upper Rhine Plain.

features

The matt black colored beetles reach a body size of 8–11 mm. They have hair that protrudes upwards on the top. There are white spots on the wings. The shaggy rose beetle is similar to the mourning rose beetle . In this one, however, the hair on the top is missing and the pattern of spots deviates from that of the shaggy rose beetle.

Way of life

The adult beetles can be observed from April to June. They feed on bee pollen - mainly yellow blooming flowers. A mass infestation of rose beetles can lead to severe damage to the blossoms of fruit trees.

The larvae feed on dead wood. Dagger wasps of the species Scolia sexmaculata parasitize a. a. on the larvae of the shaggy rose beetle. They track down the grubs buried in the ground, stun them and lay their eggs there. The hatched wasp larvae then feed on their host.
