Robert Zubrin (born April 19, 1952 ) is an American aerospace engineer, publicist and proponent of the manned flight to Mars . Zubrin worked for Lockheed Martin (previously with Martin Marietta) until the beginning of 1996 and then founded the company Pioneer Astronautics .

Commitment to the Mars flight

In 1990, Zubrin proposed a mission plan called Mars Direct , which, with existing technology, should be more cost-effective and safer than previous mission proposals. Under the motto Mars to Stay , the author is promoting the permanent settlement of volunteers on Mars. In 1998 he founded the Mars Society , which is a non-governmental organization for a manned Mars mission.

Works

  • Company Mars. The plan to colonize the red planet. ( The Case for Mars ), 1997, with Richard Wagner. Describes the Mars Direct Plan and contains speculations about the economic, social and technical feasibility of future Mars colonization.
  • Entering Space: Creating a Spacefaring Civilization , 1999. In this book, Zubrin argues for the development of mankind towards a spacefaring civilization. Based on an analysis of the current technical and political status of space travel and current innovative companies, which indicate future developments, Zubrin describes in a sound and detailed manner the feasibility and the limits of future space travel, the colonization of the solar system and other star systems. He compares the challenges of a space colonization with the colonization of the rather hostile, cold northern hemisphere of the earth by our prehistoric ancestors.
  • Mars On Earth: The Adventures of Space Pioneers in the High Arctic , 2003. Zubrin looks back at the origins and progress of the Mars Analog Research Station project, a habitat built on Devon Island in the Arctic that provides living conditions in a Mars colony simulated.
  • First Landing , 2001, a fictional story about a Mars flight in the near future based on the Mars Direct Plan.
  • The Holy Land , 2003. A SF - satire on the Middle East conflict and the war on terrorism .
  • Benedict Arnold: A Drama of the American Revolution in Five Acts , 2005. About the American revolutionary Benedict Arnold .
  • Energy Victory: Winning the War on Terror by Breaking Free of Oil , 2007. A detailed explanation of the dependence on oil, the related dependence on dictatorial OPEC governments and corruption of Western governments and how this could be overcome. Among other things, Zubrin proposes that only flexible fuel vehicles , i.e. vehicles that can use both gasoline and similar fuels such as biodiesel, should be allowed as new vehicles in the United States . The book is endorsed by former CIA director R. James Woolsey .
  • Merchants of Despair: Radical Environmentalists, Criminal Pseudo-Scientists, and the Fatal Cult of Antihumanism , 2012. In this book, Zubrin harshly criticizes the ecology movement and accuses it, among other things, of being in the anti-humanist tradition of Malthusianism and the eugenics movement. With its hostile attitude towards growth and innovation, it is putting the future of humanity at risk.
