The Zuidertoren ( German South Tower ) is a former 31 meter high lighthouse on the Dutch island of Schiermonnikoog . The Zuidertoren was built in 1854 together with the Noordertoren , which is still active today . The planners considered it necessary to erect two lighthouses on Schiermonnikoog, as an identification of lighthouses based on light signals ( identifier ) was not yet known and a reliable position determination and thus a safe passage of the shallows around Schiermonnikoog was only possible with two light signals.
In 1910 the Noordertoren was equipped with a new beacon with rotating optics and its own identification. This made the Zuidertoren superfluous. It was shut down. Between 1950 and 1952, the Zuidertoren served as a water tower , and since 1992 as a transmission tower.
