General view of the property

The former Schildgasthof Zum Goldenen Ochsen in Unterkessach, a district of Widdern in the Heilbronn district , is one of the most architecturally and historically significant buildings in the village. The property consists of a two-part main house from 1762, an attached younger barn and a separate former pig and chicken coop, which is now used as a guest house. The magnificent baroque window grilles from around 1800 are remarkable. Despite some changes, the ensemble still provides a vivid example of a wealthy country inn from the 18th century.

history

Sandstone relief on the archway of the vaulted cellar

The previous building, whose foundation walls probably still form the foundation of the main house today and from which the vaulted cellar still preserved today, was already an inn in 1665 ( Zum Hirsch until around 1747, then temporarily Zum Schwarzen Adler , from around 1749 Goldener Ochse ).

The old inn sign, today in the local history museum of Adelsheim

In 1762, Johannes Kirchner had the previous building demolished and the two-part main house built today. He opened the new restaurant Zum Goldenen Ochsen there . Two barns belonged to the original property, one of which is no longer preserved today and was replaced by a newer barn built directly onto the main house in 1859 or 1899. The other was used as a pig and chicken coop and is now used as a guest house. There was a wine press in the yard of the property. A large part of the then considerable wine harvest was possibly stored in the vaulted cellar. Today no more wine is grown in Unterkessach.

Around 1800 the royal Württemberg mayor and at the same time the grand-ducal administrator of Baden, Christian Balthasar Hespelt, had the baroque grilles that still exist today installed on the 25 windows on the ground floor. The street-side part of the main house was later expanded, which, together with the attached barn, led to the current three-part division of the building.

An old picture of the economy by F. Stammer

After a few years without a bar, Friedrich Stammer opened F. Stammer's inn in 1871 , which continued until around the end of the Second World War. In the absence of a successor, the house fell into disrepair until it was sold in 1980, after having been in the family for over 200 years.

In 1988 the building was included in the list of cultural monuments of the State Monuments Office of Baden-Württemberg.

In 2007, hurricane Kyrill felled the old chestnut tree to the right of the house, which was probably as old as the house itself.

Part of the garden is designed as a cottage garden. The complex is more recent, but according to old plans in the local museum of Unterkessach there was a garden area separated from the surrounding meadows by walls.
