Geographical location and dates
The Zuqualla is located about 25 km south-southwest of Debre Zeyit and rises about 1100 m above the surrounding area. Its base is 12 km in diameter. The caldera is 2 km in diameter and about 300 m deep.
Crater lake with structures
The Zuqualla is known for its crater lake, which is considered sacred by Ethiopian Christians as well as followers of traditional African religions . On an island of the lake there is a monastery, supposedly founded by the holy Gebre Manfus . It was destroyed and a church at the foot of the mountain was looted by Imam Ahmad Gragn (the "left-handed") in 1531. There are still many holy places on and around the mountain, mostly artificial rock formations. The monastery organizes a festival every six months.
