Additional protection

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As additional protection supplementary measures to reduce the risks to humans and animals are understood to be effective if the basic protection or the error protection in an electrical installation fail. The additional protection is an additional measure and does not count as a protective measure (error protection) on its own .

Additional protection measures

The additional protection measure for Germany according to DIN VDE 0100-410: 2018-10 section 411.3.3 and for Austria according to ÖVE / ÖNorm E 8001-1: 2010-03 section 6 is the installation of a residual current protective device with a maximum nominal residual current of 30 mA.

  • For Germany on circuits for sockets with a rated current not greater than 32 A, which are intended for use by laypersons and for general use, as well as all lighting circuits in apartments. In addition: Final circuits for equipment portable outdoors with a rated current not greater than 32 A.
  • For Austria both on circuits with "sockets for household use and similar purposes" and for circuits with standardized "sockets for industrial applications" each for a rated current of 16 A, in addition to the application of the measures of fault protection protective earthing , zeroing or residual current protection circuit .

Note: In contrast to ÖVE / ÖNorm E 8001-1, the use of residual current protective devices in TN-C systems (system with zeroing) is expressly prohibited for Germany in DIN VDE 0100-410: 2007-06 under point 411.4.5 .

The additional protection is prescribed internationally for various "special systems" with increased risk.
