The Zweckverband Entsorgungsregion West (ZEW) is responsible for municipal waste management for the Aachen city region and the Düren district . The ZEW is responsible for avoiding, recycling and disposing of waste in the association's territory, which comprises a total of 25 cities and municipalities and is 1,647 km² in size. The merger makes it possible to offer the citizens a maximum of disposal services.

The goals of the ZEW are:

  • Services of general interest, ie the provision of an orderly waste disposal structure that can be used by all municipalities, citizens and businesses.
  • Sustainability, ie a reliable and permanent waste disposal structure in the interests of future generations. Ecological and economic objectives are equally taken into account.
  • Priority is given to the avoidance and recycling of waste, ie continuous further development and pursuit of these goals.
  • Environmentally friendly disposal, ie minimizing carbon dioxide emissions and pollution as well as protecting the groundwater are paramount.
  • Fair waste fees, ie municipal disposal instead of private profits
